Clinical Data Exchange Service
The basic clinical data exchange service is secure electronic delivery into an
EHR of clinical data. Electronic delivery replaces patient data sent or received
via fax or courier. Redwood MedNet enables participants to replace reports
printed on paper with a secure electronic data delivery service. Making health
data and clinical messages arrive where they are needed helps simplify patient
care workflow and reduces data entry errors. Some examples:
- Laboratory test results are sent as structured data to the ordering
clinician, either via the Redwood MedNet portal or directly into
the receiving clinician's EHR
- Narrative transcription as electronic text sent directly into the
receiving clinician's EHR
- Admitting documents for a long term care resident are sent to a hospital,
or discharge documents are sent from a hospital to accompany a patient's
transfer to a long term care facility
The basic clinical exchange service provided by Redwood MedNet
includes access to a portal for sites with no EHR, or for sites whose EHR lacks
affordable interfaces for comprehensive electronic clinical messages.

Community Gateway
The Redwood MedNet community exchange gateway provisions messaging services that
integrate with site-level EHR software. For example:
- A test in ordered in a local EHR from an off site laboratory or imaging
center, and the result is received in the EHR
- An ER retrieves a care summary about a patient from the EHR at the
patient's primary care provider
- A patient's PHR (i.e., patient mediated exchange) queries an outpatient
practice or hospital for a copy of a recent visit
Redwood MedNet can build and provision this type of bidirectional
gateway service at healthcare facilities with EHR solutions that are able to
support these exchange services. The practicality of this type of community
exchange gateway service is dependent upon robust patient consent management* at
each participating healthcare facility.
* Note - some certified EHRs are not able to manage fully informed
patient consent. Even with robust consent management, some EHRs are not able to
support fully bidirectional services. Some EHRs have no outbound ordering
capability, and some EHRs that support outbound orders have no ability to import
an unsolicited clinical result. Bidirectionality of clinical data traffic is
mostly an ad hoc process, and ranges from easy to prohibitively expensive to
completely impossible.

Network Appliance
Redwood MedNet deploys a
small
form factor hardware appliance when appropriate at sites lacking technology
staff or a hardened network perimeter. The network appliance, built and
maintained by Redwood MedNet, is a secure endpoint that strengthens the
establishment of agile, resilient, and bidirectional clinical data exchange
services.
